The FedCom Civil War rages on and the factory world of Hesperus II is a prize coveted by both sides. Katherine Steiner-Davion, locked in struggle with her brother Victor, must keep control of such a vital world. The Gray Death Legion, reeling from the death of their beloved founder, is sent to garrison Hesperus against the possibility of attack by Victor's forces. But there is a third party who could create problems for all involved.
Sensing their chance at last, the separatist forces of Free Skye declare their independence from the hated Lyran Alliance. In a bid to secure a means of producing their own BattleMechs, Free Skye sends a force to capture the factories on Hesperus.
Demoralized and distrusted, the Gray Death Legion is caught in a situation they cannot win. But will they even survive?
