Whoever said "War is hell" was absolutely correct, as Sir Paul Masters, commander of the newly-formed Knights of the Inner Sphere, discovers when he travels to the world of Gibson. Caught between the Word of Blake, a splinter group of the powerful ComStar which has made its home on Gibson, and native insurgents who object to the Blakist presence, Masters has to navigate the treacherous waters of guerrilla warfare, political betrayal, and the disillusionment of his own ideals.
