Merik, Ral

Talented and charismatic General in command of the Merik's Grenadiers regiment of the Capellan Hussars. Merik rose to power as a result of Stephen Edward Liao's obsession with all things military. The ambitious Merik was opposed by advisors of Stephen's son Duncan Liao, who urged a reduction in the General's power. Merik reacted by holding Duncan hostage for seven months while his regiment controlled the Capellan Confederation government. Merik was killed when, following Duncan's suicide, Jasmine Liao declared herself Chancellor and exterminated Merik's Grenadiers. As a direct result of Merik's ambitions, in 2455 Jasmine Liao transferred significant military power to the office of Chancellor, and declared that no Capellan officer would maintain a rank above Colonel. This rule persisted for over 600 years, until Sun-Tzu Liao's Xin Sheng reforms in the early 3060s recreated the ranks of General and Senior General.
