Introduction
Ares is a world within the Capellan Confederation, near the Capellan Commonality border with the Federated Suns. Despite its exposed position and critical facilities, Ares has generally been passed over as a target during the Succession Wars, leaving it relatively prosperous.
Early Years
One of the first planets in the Capellan Zone to be colonized, Ares was a thriving settlement by the early 2200s. The world was a participant in the Capellan Co-Prosperity Sphere, whereby she lent military aid to Capella in exchange for information; in this capacity she contributed to defending Capella against the 2225 attack of the Sarna Supremacy. As a member of the Co-Prosperity Sphere, Ares became one of the first members of the Capellan Hegemony when it was formed in 2270.
The Ares Conventions
Doubtless the most memorable note in the history of Ares was the conference conducted there in 2412 at the behest of Chancellor Aleisha Liao. Involving representatives of all major interstellar governments, this meeting eventually resulted in the Ares Conventions, which at once both ritualized war and formalized it as a means of dispute resolution.
The Succession Wars
Despite the significance of its facilities (by 3025 Ares boasted one of only eight operating BattleMech facilities in the Capellan Confederation), the planet was largely ignored by both Davion attackers and Capellan defenders. (Perhaps making Ares the subject of military action would have called unwelcome attention to how far the Successor Houses had strayed from the Ares Conventions.) As a consequence, Ares grew into a burgeoning trading port despite the ravages of the Succession Wars. It also developed considerable military manufactories; in addition to the Bergan Industries BattleMech plant which produce Locust and Stinger light 'Mechs, Ares possesses the Earthwerks, Ltd. dropship yards (one of only a handful of such facilities in Capellan space) and the vehicle factories of Quikscell Company.
Recent Events
The St. Ives conflict, on the very doorstep of Ares, finally made the Strategios conscious of the threat to one of Capella's oldest worlds. During the shakeup in Capellan deployments following the Xin Sheng campaign, both the 2nd Capellan Defense Force and the 4th McCarron's Armored Cavalry were, at one point or another, assigned to the world.
